Top Tips For Using A Pram In Slippery Or Snowy Conditions

Chilly, rainy and icy conditions are often dreaded by parents because going on walks with a pram can be far more precarious than it needs to be.

Whilst British winters can vary dramatically, the recent snowy and icy conditions have been particularly treacherous for parent and child alike, unless they have the right preparations and have hired the right pram for the job.

Despite this, a morning walk in the bracing weather can be very good for a young child, and there is no reason to avoid the morning walk as long as the weather is safe enough to go out in.

With that in mind, here are some top tips for safely using a pram in the snow, in wet weather or if there is a risk of ice.

Choose The Right Pram

There are various hazards when it comes to winter weather, and there are different prams suited for the job. If you expect thicker snow, such as at a ski resort, you may need a more heavy duty pram.

In general, if you expect some level of snow or ice, opt for prams with larger wheels and better suspension, as that can absorb some of the unexpected bumps.

As well as this, choose a four-wheel pram, rather than three, and opt for locked wheels rather than free-axle “trolley-style” wheels.

Dress Your Baby In Layers

Keeping your baby warm in the cold weather is essential, but the best way to do this is the same way hikers and mountain climbers stay warm; wear multiple thin layers to trap the cold air.

It is possible to overheat, even in cold weather, and that can actually cause a baby to cool down quicker once they stop moving.

Because of this, avoid putting a blanket over the buggy, and if you want to tuck them in, only do so up to the chest.
