Are Baby Strollers Suitable For Newborns?

If you have a newborn child and need to rent a means of transporting them around when away from home, you may consider various options. You could try a pram or even a sling, but could you use a stroller for a baby that age?

According to the NHS, the answer is yes - with the proviso that it can recline fully. What this means is that the baby can lie on his/her back, as they won’t yet be able to support their own head.

The other advice it gives is that a stroller needs to be lightweight if you have to lift it onto a bus or a train.

Consequently, the answer is that many strollers will not be useful for newborns, or, for that matter, for public transport users.

However, having established those that are, we may consider which one might suit you and your baby best out of the Babyzen/Stokke Newborn Pack and the Bassinet.

The Babyzen has the benefit of being specifically designed with newborns in mind, so the reclining feature comes as its default. However, it comes with the exceptional flexibility of being foldable, which means it can be carried over the shoulder and easily stored on an airline.

With its Newborn Pack, it weighs just 7.8 kg, so it’s easy to carry around. This provides the flexibility to use it when travelling, even on a plane.

An alternative is the Bassinet set up, which is designed to be used as a stroller, or detached so that your baby can be carried as in a traditional carrycot.

This allows for maximum comfort and is more suited to a situation where you would not lift the baby out and carry it, but allow the tot to lie there all warm and snug.

A Bassinet may, therefore, be a better choice if your baby does not like being carried around and can sleep more easily in a recumbent position at any time. However, unlike the Babyzen with a Newborn Pack, it is not something you can fold up and fit on a plane, so it may be less useful for those flying.
